An office app for the iPhone and iPod ouch that lets you edit Word documents and Excel spreadsheets in .doc and .xls formats. (Note that the app’s name is pronounced “Office Squared,” and that the ”2” appears as a superscript when you’re searching for it on the App Store.) iPad search

Office2 also provides integration with Google Docs, letting you edit Google Docs documents and spreadsheets from within the app. You can also access, move, and delete documents stored in Google Docs, iDisk and any WebDAV server.

The Office2 word processor lets you view, create, edit and save documents in Word 97-2003 (.doc) format. It also supports character formatting, tables, images, searching of text within documents, undo and redo up to 100 undo levels, and auto-correction and auto-completion.

The Office2 spreadsheet works with Excel 97-2003 (.xls) and handles multiple worksheets with unlimited rows and columns, searching and sorting of cells, cell formatting, cell types, and pane freezing among other spreadsheet necessities. Office2 uses the iPhone’s touch screen effectively, letting you tap and drag to change row heights and column widths, and tap cells to compose formulas.

Those of you cringing at the thought of doing any sort of document or spreadsheet work on an iPhone or iPod touch will probably do best avoiding this app—or hold out for an iPad and its customized version of the iWork apps—but for those who often need to review and edit documents and spreadsheets while on the go, this app could make life easier.

There are three major comic-book buying apps for the iPhone: Panelfly, Comics, and iVerse Comics. And there are also a bunch of comic-reading apps for the iPhone, my favorite of which is ComicZeal.

Now, I don’t want to tell these developers what to do. But I will. Developers, download the software-development kit for the iPad and get iPad versions of your apps working on the device for its launch!

There will be a lot of debate about the iPad’s viability as a product. Will it sell? Will it make a good e-book reader? Will it save the newspaper industry? And we’ll probably debate all of those items in the coming days.

But for now, let’s take a moment to consider the humble comic-book lovin’ geek. The iPad may be the best device yet invented for the reading of digital comics. The iPhone is nice, but its screen is just too small — zoomed out, a comic page is unreadable. Zoomed in, there’s a whole lot of panning around going on.

But the iPad’s 1024-by-768-pixel display, while in the unfashionable 4:3 aspect ratio, is just about the right shape for a comic-book page. And the iPad packs enough pixels that comic pages should be readable at full-size on the iPad. At worst, the panning around should be kept to a minimum.

A comic page shrunk down to the iPad's screen resolution should still be quite readable, as this extremely cropped sample image suggests.

Presumably these developers are already on the case. I know the guys at Comixology, makers of Comics, are: on Wednesday they posted a comics-on-iPad concept video. My reaction: their demo relies a bit too much on their pan-and-scan interface, which works great on the iPhone but seems kind of unnecessary on the iPad. Still, I’m sure there’s plenty of room for innovation and interface variation when it comes to comics apps on the iPad. I can’t wait to try them all!

Android devices come from all walks of life but rarely do they carry as much baggage as the MILESTONE. Motorola seem to be betting the farm with the MILESTONE and the warm reception it’s getting must leave them breathing a sigh of relief. Catching the Android wave may’ve seemed like the last available move but a device like the MILESTONE makes turning the tide much more likely.

So, Motorola are back with a bang and the MILESTONE is one of the best spec’d phone to ever run Android. The Google Nexus One is supposed to instill fear in nearly every touchscreen device out there but the Moto Droid must be positioned well enough by now to withstand the attack.

Main disadvantages

No DivX and XviD video playback

No smart and voice dialing

Somewhat clumsy camera interface and limited camera features

No free GPS navigation solution

No Flash support for the web browser

No FM radio

There’s hardly anything missing on the Motorola MILESTONE spec sheet so we should be ready for an exciting ride. The test-drive got us impressed: at the end of our preview we felt positive about the MILESTONE prospects. So now, the Moto DROID has a full review ahead to build on that good impression.

Considering the rate of its sales, the handset is doing well from a user point of view too. Yet, a short-lived success is just not good enough for Motorola: the company doesn’t have the resources to come up with an equally talented successor as quick as some of the competitors. So, the MILESTONE needs to stick around the top of the sales charts for at least a few months to give Motorola some breathing space.

Just as expected, today Apple announced their iPad tablet. It's not everyday that you see news about something other than mobile phones at our homepage but considering the hype that one this generated we just couldn't help ourselves.

The tablet is actually running a UI very similar to the iPhone's and is compatible with all its apps. However it can only use its 3G connectivity for data transfers so it doesn't quality as a phone.

A Chinese site by the name of Mobile Android seems to have found first pictures and specs sheet of the upcoming sequel to the popular Droid phone, dubbed as Motorola Sholes Tablet. The leaked specs sheet looks impressive with 3.7’’ 840×485 WVGA capacitive multi-touch screen, 8 megapixel camera and HDMI output like the one in Zune HD. This combination of HDMI port + 8 megapixel camera will enable Sholes (Droid 2.0) to record high definition video, and then output it in HD 720p resolution.

Sholes Tablet will be powered by Android 2.0 and will not include physical keyboard like its predecessor Motorola Droid on Verizon. We can expect official word on Sholes Tablet from Motorola soon.

Sholes Tablet will probably go on sale in second half of 2010. With Sony Ericsson’s Xperia X10 also set to release in the same year as Sholes Tablet and with 8 megapixels camera, things are surely looking good for theAndroid camp. [via BGR]

We have to agree that it’s no Bold 9700 and no Motorola Droid, but Verizon’s new BlackBerry Storm2 certainly has what it takes to get our attention. Speaking of which, we just got our hands on some leaked documents where the Storm2 is being expected to release on Big Red starting October 28 for a price that will go just shy of $180.

Not that we’re not happy to know the release is just around the corner, but there are things we can’t understand. There’s the Bold 2 in queue and it’s a pretty darn interesting smartphone to do with, there’s also one of the most craved for mobile of the year, the Droid, and Verizon does what? Announce the new BB Storm 2 for the end of October? Doesn’t it sound like they’re trying to “actually” bury it.

Those who can’t remember, BlackBerry Storm 2 packs a 3.2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, the BlackBerry OS 5.0, threaded texting, an enhanced SurePress typing system that would employ Piezo technology, more durable rubber keys and a highly responsive screen and capabilities to display orientation in no time.

For European consumers, the Palm Pre has been a long time coming. Announced – in CDMA form – back in January 2009, with Palm coyly dancing around the matter of a GSM version until its Sprint launch took place in June, the smartphone has even gained a sibling (in the shape of the Palm Pixi) before those across the Atlantic have had a chance to play with the original. That’s all finally changing this month, with carrier O2 exclusively offering the Pre in the UK and Ireland from October 16th and Germany from October 13th. Has time dulled the Pre’s appeal? SlashGear have been testing out the GSM Palm Pre; check out our full review after the cut.

In terms of hardware, the O2 Pre is almost exactly the same as the Sprint Pre we reviewed back in June. That means you get the same 3.1-inch 320 x 480 capacitive touchscreen, the slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 3-megapixel fixed-focus camera and both Bluetooth 2.1+EDR and WiFi b/g. Where they differ is in the 3G connectivity; while Sprint’s Pre uses EVDO Rev.A for its high-speed mobile browsing, the O2 version has UMTS/HSPA with EDGE/GSM support.

What the GSM Pre won’t have, at least initially, is the latest version of webOS. For manufacturing deadline reasons, Palm and O2 will ship the Pre with webOS 1.1.3, a few updates behind the Sprint CDMA model. According to Palm, the eventual aim is “parity” between the two devices, but that won’t come until later on in 2009.

There’s also, despite it being ten months since the Pre made its surprise debut at CES in January, no microSD memory card slot; the handset still makes do with 8GB of onboard storage, of which around 7GB is available to the user. That seemed short-sighted in January, miserly in June and now, in October, feels downright unacceptable. When Apple’s iPhone 3GS offers 16GB as a baseline, and other platforms – Android, Windows Mobile, Symbian – use microSD cards for up to 32GB of swappable storage, for Palm to limit their flagship device in this way seems ridiculous.

The physical design is still a mixed bag, with what feel like high-quality plastics let down in places by unduly sharp edges to the keyboard-slide lip and elsewhere at the split-point. While the Pre opens with a satisfying click, there’s side-to-side wobble in the screen hinge which is disappointing. As for the QWERTY keyboard itself, that’s provoked different responses; the keys are hard rubber and are reasonably spaced given the limitations of the hardware – the Pre is a surprisingly compact handset – but we don’t feel they offer a significant knock-out blow over and above an on-screen keyboard.

Where the Pre really shines is in its software, and webOS has proved an ongoing pleasure in its harmonious use of gestures and multitouch. The central concept is that open applications are “cards” splayed across the main display, and which you can reshuffle by dragging them into new orders, or dismiss by flicking them up off the top of the screen. New alerts are quietly pushed up at the bottom of the display in the form of tiny icons – an envelope for new email, a speech bubble for an SMS message, etc – and are then previewed when you tap on that icon; a further tap opens the message, while a sideways flick dismisses it.

These sideways flicks also feature in the messaging inboxes, used to delete unwanted emails and texts. We’ve been impressed by how quickly it’s possible to triage a hectic inbox on the Pre, in many cases without even needing to open most messages. As well as showing sender, subject and part of the first line by default, you can also pinch-zoom on an individual message to see a bigger preview, even with HTML formatting maintained. Unlike in loading new cards, which can be punctuated by the occasional lag as the Pre’s CPU catches up, churning through email is generally slick and speedy; the handset supports POP and IMAP accounts, together with Exchange push-email.

The Pre’s main menu is split into two, with a quick-launch bar of four shortcuts and the menu launcher that runs along the bottom of the homescreen, and the full menu itself. The launcher can be called up by tapping and holding in the black section under the display – what Palm call the gesture area, and which has an invisible capacitive touchscreen layer – then pulling up, at which point the launcher floats above the active card. In the center of the gesture area is a small silver stud (illuminated when new messages arrive) which takes you back to the card view. We covered more of the basics of webOS navigation back in our original Pre review, and they haven’t changed in this new GSM version.

Something else that hasn’t changed – unfortunately – is the accuracy demands of webOS, and we’ve been caught out a few times when taps fail to be recognised. The Pre’s small, round function buttons, such as the trash or reply controls, are particularly prone to this, as is the small drop-down menu button in the top left-hand corner of the display.

Back at launch, Palm made much of their universal search and Synergy on the Pre, two areas where rival platforms have quickly caught up. Despite the name, universal search isn’t quite all-encompassing; start typing from the homescreen and it will pull up apps and contacts, then offer Google, Google Maps, Wikipedia and Twitter search, but in 1.1.3 there’s no email or calendar searches. As for Synergy, this pulls together Facebook, Exchange, Google Contacts and other sources of contact-data and harmonises them into a single address book; it works reasonably well, though as with any data-convergence system it depends on how many contacts you have in each source. Meanwhile calendars are also combined, intelligently showing empty space for new appointments; however you still can’t add a single new entry to multiple calendars at once.
